When did you begin to play derby?
Started training to ref back in 2011
What's your primary position?
Announcer at games & Jam Timer at scrimmage
Where are you from?
Born in Ukraine, grew up in Ohio then NYC
What's the story behind your name?
I was drinking Herbal Tea while trying to come up with a name. It dawned on me that "Verbal" sounded like Herbal and the plural of Tea sounded like Tease. Since I liked "The Usual Suspects" main character Verbal Kint and "Verbal Tease" sounds like both a proper noun and adjective, I thought it would fit the derby announcer character.
You dedicate a lot of time to derby, so what has derby done for you?
Derby has introduced me to some amazing people, broadened my horizons in a number of ways, and been a great conduit for participation within the community. It's also quite an entertaining way to spend my time.
There are so many awesome people for whom I have great admiration. Not enough space to list them all here.
How'd you get into derby?
Friends brought me to games in Asbury. Liked it so much, wanted to be a part of it. Almost became a referee. Decided to try out for announcer instead. Very glad I did!
Sadly, I haven't bought new skates after Sandy destroyed mine. So rentals.
Favorite derby moment?
Again, too many to list, but Star Wars Derby was one time when I almost couldn't contain my childish glee at how awesome it all was.
There are so many amazing feats of athleticism that we almost begin to take them for granted. So I like when we have an audience and you can hear the crowd's reaction to a great move or a moment of personal victory on the track. I dislike all the drama that seems to bubble up under the surface, as it does in any organization.
I'd love to announce at the championships some time.
